Psi Iota Xi, a philanthropic organization for women, was founded in Muncie, Indiana in 1897. The sorority is now comprised of over 130 Chapters in five states including Indiana, Illinois, Ohio, Michigan and Kentucky. In over 100 years in existence the women of Psi Iota Xi have contributed millions of dollars to philanthropic projects meeting needs in their communities, states and the nation particularly in the areas of fine arts, music, literature/literacy and speech and hearing.

Since 1998, the members have donated over one million dollars each year. Many of the projects were at the local level funding scholarships, art work, and local speech and hearing clinics. As a national organization we donated monies for research grants to the American Speech-Language-Hearing Foundation, Cleft Palate Research for Children through the Carle Development Foundation, the Central Region Auditions of the Metropolitan Opera, the Deaf Youth Sports Festival in Louisville, Kentucky, the Van Riper Lecture Series for Speech and Hearing at Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo, Michigan, Riley Childrens Hospital in Indianapolis, Indiana, and the Hoosier Art Salon. Our Past National Presidents raise funds for and grant a scholarship yearly to a student at Gallaudet University in Washington D.C. Each year six Chapters, one from each district, are granted funds for community literature/literacy projects as well as a rotating grant to each state association. Numerous school children each year attend concerts of the Indianapolis Symphony, Evansville Philharmonic, Fort Wayne Philharmonic and South Bend Symphony Orchestra through funds generated by the Elsie Sweeney Foundation through Psi Iota Xi. Each year these orchestras as well as the Louisville Orchestra receive donations from the Sweeney Foundation and various Chapters.

We are close to completing our current longterm project of $113,000.00 to fund Cleft Palate Research in Children at the Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana, Illinois. These monies help to fund MRI testing to better facilitate surgery for children born with cleft palate. This research has already had an impact worldwide and is truly making a difference for children and their families by significantly reducing the number of surgeries needed to correct this malady and improve quality of life.

The members of Psi Iota Xi work tirelessly to improve their communities, states and nation as they support speech and hearing, art, literature/literacy and music philanthropic endeavors.
